Teaching/Counseling for Pornography

Who's In Your Pews?

  • Why did Ray miss the Morning Service? No one knows he spent all night looking at his porn websites.
  • Mrs. Jones is the newest gossip at church ever since she filed for divorce. No one knows that she wants out of a marriage where her husband forces her to act out all the painful pornographic positions he sees.
  • Scott volunteers at church to picket the local adult bookstore. No one knows he is trying to get rid of those years of memories he collected when his dad wanted him to watch the porn movies and websites.
  • Jim is still single at the age of 24. No one knows he has been watching porn for ten years and that he can’t get all those images out of his mind. He doesn’t think he can be satisfied with just one woman.

How Do They Feel?

  • They begin to view women as adult toys to be tinkered with and sexual objects to be violated. They are shown as weak, helpless, submissive sexual servants to a man’s every imaginable fantasy. These men have to be thoroughly re-educated in church that women are to be treated with respect and dignity.
  • They begin to view sex as a physical using instead of a spiritual union. There is no giving, only getting. A man ends up believing that his orgasm is the only goal. It becomes raw and ritualistic, without love. Soon, a husband wants to imitate what he sees and he’ll ask the wife to things that are painful to her.
  • They begin to view marriage as an inconvenience. Their wife gets in the way of having unlimited access to a wider variety of sexual partners and positions. He no longer is satisfied with the breasts of his wife, as he should be (Proverbs 5:20). Sexual selfishness takes precedence over marital vows. The marriage ends.
  • Women who are sexually involved with men addicted to porn will be told they are second best now. They’ll be told that something is wrong with them because they won’t or can’t do what he now requires. They need your help in telling them that they are not flawed and their approval comes from God above.

What Not To Do

  • Don’t underestimate the power of pictures. Spouting off a handful of Bible verses about lust is no competition to the hundreds of thousands of naked women he has stored in his memory. Porn is not a harmless activity; it can grab hold of him and turn into a lifestyle that leads into darker alleys. This is intense spiritual warfare for his soul; it’s not just a sexual struggle. He will need to be monitored now.
  • Don’t be surprised at the frequency or intensity of porn in your congregation. The Bible speaks abundantly about the temptations and struggles that we will uniquely have with our eyes and desires. (Job 31:1; Psalm 101:3-8; 119:37; Proverbs 4:25; 6:24-29; 27:20; Eccl. 1:8; Isaiah 3:16-25; Matthew 5:8,28-30; 6:22-2; 2 Cor.4:18; Hebrews 12:2; 2 Peter 2:10-19; 1 John 2:16-17; Ephesians 4:17-19; 5:3-14; Galatians 5:13-19,24; 6:8; Romans 7:5-25; 8:5-14; 1 Corinthians 5:9; 6:12,13; Colossians 3:5-7; 1Thess.4:5; James 1:13-16; Titus 2:12-14; 3:3; 2 Timothy 2:22; 1 Peter 2:11; 4:2-3; 2 Peter 2:18-19).

Scriptures to Know

  • The story of Achan (Joshua 6:17-19 and 7: 21-25). He hid something in his house that he wasn’t supposed to have. God knew when no one else did. His whole family suffered as a direct result.
  • The story of Herod (Mark 6:21-29; Matthew 14:6-12). Herod’s weakness was women. The king turns into a slave who is willing to give away his kingdom in order to get more of his dancing centerfold.
  • The story of Samson (Judges 14-16). His eyes rested on Delilah, who would be his undoing and death. He realizes he could not set himself free. Many men today are similar to Samson in their porn addiction.
  • The believers at Ephesus (Acts 19:17-20). As a sign of their conversion, they burned their books and scrolls which would hinder their walk with the Lord. Some men need to burn their magazines today.
  • The seductive Moabite women (Numbers 25). Some men in Israel were engaging in sexual immorality with these women. Zimri actually brought Cozbi into his home. Men are bringing in women via porn. Phinehas was the one who stood up to this and exposed those who were guilty. Might you do the same?
